C. Renewal of Certification

An Original Certification is valid for five years from December 31 of the year in which issued. Certification Renewal is valid until December 31 of the year specified.

Renewal is not automatic. To renew Certified status, the following is required:

  1. A Certified Individual must make application on or before August 30 of the fifth year following Original Certification or Certification Renewal, on the appropriate MCTA form.
  2. A Certified Individual must attend the Annual School of the MCTA a minimum of three years of the five years following Original Certification or Certification Renewal. Failure to meet this requirement renders an individual ineligible for Renewal. Such individual must re-apply for Certification under the rules governing original Certification, including passing the examination, dating back to the year of the individual's Original Certification or Certification Renewal.
  3. In each of the three years of attending School during that five year interval, a Certified Individual must take course #201 -"Review of New Legislation", plus 5 hours of courses of choice. Courses of choice may be any courses* the Certified Individual deems beneficial to his or her professional knowledge, and are not limited to courses in the “Certified Track.”

Renewal of expired or lapsed Certification:

  1. A Certified Individual who fulfills the three year course and attendance requirements but neglects to file application for renewal at the proper time may apply in a subsequent year without taking examination, so long as the period of lapse does not exceed two years. In such an instance, renewal will be valid only until December 31 of the year which would have been the normal Certification Renewal year.
  2. A Certified Individual who fulfills the three year course and attendance requirements but does not apply for Renewal of Certification at the proper time, and whose period of lapse exceeds two years but is not more than five years, is required to take and pass the Certification examination to obtain renewal of Certified status.
  3. A Certified Individual who does not apply for Renewal of Certification at the proper time, does not fulfill course and attendance requirements and whose period of lapse exceeds two years, is required to attend School for a minimum of two years subsequent to his or her Certification Anniversary date or last Renewal Anniversary date and must take and pass the Certification examination to obtain renewal of Certified status.

*Credit towards certification renewal is granted for classroom instruction or classroom support at the MCTA Annual School. We encourage our Certified members to participate in the School as an instructor, assistant instructor or monitor.
